TUTORING
Reading
Reading is the key to success in school and in life. At Learning WorX our goal is to help your child become a successful reader. To be a successful reader, students must master phonemic awareness skills, phonics skills, sight word/high frequency word recognition skills, structural analysis skills, comprehension skills, vocabulary (word meaning) skills, study skills, and they must be able to read at an appropriate oral reading rate. All these skills – along with a love for reading -- work together to make a successful reader
Phonics
Phonics is the tool that students use to learn to read new words. We will teach students how to use the basic sounds, vowel patterns (rules), and syllable patterns to read/decode and spell many words. We will help students identify words that do not follow a vowel pattern, and teach them as sight words. Phonics is also the basis for developing the oral reading rate that is required to meet “words per minute” rates at each grade level.
Writing
The student’s ability to express himself or herself through writing is a key component in mastering Common Core State Standards. We will help students learn writing structures for producing the major genres of writing. Students will be taught how to write a constructed response answer to open-ended questions that require them to cite evidence from reading passages. Also, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation will be taught and/or reviewed.
Spelling
Beyond understanding of basic numerical concepts (counting and place value), math success requires students to be at “mastery” in their understanding and application of its basic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students must also be able to apply math skills in real world situations or story problems. We will help students develop the basic skills of math and teach them strategies that will lead to real success.
